Referral marketing is a fancy way of saying referral program; it is a deliberate, structured way for companies to get other people to make referrals to their business. It’s also sometimes called word-of-mouth marketing because it rewards existing customers for getting new customers to purchase a product or service from a company they may otherwise have not done business with.

Born out of frustration with expensive perfume bottles collecting dust on a dresser or cabinet, Scentbird offers a delivery subscription service that gives you access to a 30-day supply of over 450 top designer fragrances. The subscription service lets you "date" fragrances before committing to "marrying" them.
It’s hard to get the attention of consumers, and pay-per-click ads lack one thing affiliate marketing has: credibility.
First off, potential affiliates need to know your program exists. Equally as important is providing an incentive for someone to want to become an affiliate and promote your products or services. For example, Amazon, the most popular affiliate program, offers more advantages and benefits than its competitors.
From solo entrepreneurs to startups to massive Fortune 500 companies, anyone could be the merchant behind an affiliate marketing program. They don’t even have to be actively involved. They just need to have a product to sell.
Pointing to your affiliate link and sharing it at the end of the webinar is a soft sell and comes naturally since you just spent an hour talking about the product.
But I was determined to learn as much as possible about affiliate marketing for dummies (read: beginners!) and bloggers and take my income to the next level.
Keep in mind that your affiliate program needs to be attractive in order to garner attention from the top affiliates. If it’s too difficult to generate conversions, it’ll be more challenging to find marketers that want to promote your products.

owntheyard.com is a website built by affiliate marketing expert Spencer Haws. Launched in September 2018, the site now earns in excess of $2500 per month. Admittedly, Spencer spent a lot of money outsourcing much of the work, but owntheyard.com really does showcase what an affiliate website can generate and it’s a great example of affiliate marketing for beginners to draw inspiration from.
ClickBank is yet another affiliate network that falls into the “grandparent” category — they’ve been online since 1998.
